“If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything; it is open to everything. In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities; in the expert’s mind there are few.” — Shunryu Suzuki
As we embark on the first few months of the new year, you may be contemplating what you want to bring into your life, how you would like to grow, or what you would experience this year. What if you could embrace the new year with a freshness of appreciation, recapture the sense of excitement, curiosity, and wonder? We invite you to do just that by welcoming in the practice of developing your beginner’s mind —when you are a true beginner, you can learn anything.
The Zen Buddhist term, Shoshin, means “beginner’s mind”, and it is a practice that invites us to look at the world as if it is ever new. Lisa and Michael would like to encourage you to consider one of life’s greatest gifts —the possibility of welcoming each day and each experience with a childlike curiosity and awe of not knowing what is yet to unfold. As young children we naturally “live the questions,” as poet Rainer Maria Rilke wrote, as adults we’ve come to make assumptions, judgments and anchor into expectations. But what if instead, you were to embrace a beginner’s mind approaching activities with an open mind, allowing you to more fully enjoy and appreciate the present moment.
On thie episode, we will be sharing our thoughts on how approaching the world with a sense of authentic curiosity enables you to rediscover the joy of experiencing something new. We will be discussing how embracing a beginner’s mind elevates your creativity and brings your attention to the presence of who you truly are. Life is very dynamic, when you cultivate a beginner’s mind you gain the ability to approach life from a fresher perspective, cultivate an openness to possibility and grow in what matters most — your true nature towards the light we all share, the radiance in all of us.
